For Paula Goodridge, Mosaic Medical Center – Maryville Emergency Department and Respiratory Therapy director, there is a personal connection to National Stroke Awareness Month. Her father, John Miller, suffered a stroke on February 28, 2022. “I was getting ready for work when my mother called, saying my father had fallen,” says Paula. “I heard my father’s voice in a very slurred manner say, ‘my left hand is not working.’ Being a nurse in the ED, I immediately knew that the slurred voice and difficulty using his hand were a sign of stroke.” John was rushed to the emergency room at Mosaic Medical Center – Maryville where Paula met them at the door. It was determined that John suffered a right-sided stroke that affected his left side and speech at the age of 77. He was admitted for care in Maryville. “We immediately began treatment with the amazing physical, occupational and speech therapists in Maryville,” Paula noted. “He showed signs of improvement with each passing day.” John would end up needing long term stroke therapy. The care managers and social workers at Mosaic Medical Center – Maryville were able to get him accepted at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Neb. where he spent 28 days improving. “Bringing him back home was worth all the work he had done in those 28 days,” says Paula. “Although he still has residual weakness and memory problems, he has learned to adapt and continues to live independently.” Reflecting on the experience with her father, Paula is reminded of the critical importance of stroke education and awareness not just for health care professionals but for the community. “Talking frequently about the BE FAST symptoms and reinforcing that immediate treatment leads to better outcomes can save even one person from having long-term effects from a stroke.” To learn more about stroke services at Mosaic, visit myMLC.com/stroke.

Mosaic Life Care Cardiovascular Care celebrates a significant milestone – their 100th WATCHMAN Implant procedure. Patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) are at an increased risk of stroke and require blood thinning medications to prevent clots from forming in the heart. However, some patients are unable to tolerate blood thinners due to excessive bruising, a high risk of falls or life-threatening bleeding. For these patients, the WATCHMAN Implant is a great alternative. “The most significant benefit of the WATCHMAN Implant is that it reduces the rates of people who need blood thinners,” says German Kamalov, MD, Mosaic cardiologist. “It allows patients to not worry about major bleeding incidents while still being protected from a stroke.” Additionally, having the WATCHMAN Implant procedure available at Mosaic means patients can be close to home and not have to travel. “Patients can be close to home, which means less stress for them,” says Dr. Kamalov. Congratulations to Dr. Kamalov and the team for this significant milestone!

All week Mosaic Life Care has been celebrating nurses in several ways in honor of National Nurses’ Week. Part of the celebration included "Blessing of the Hands" ceremonies, performed by Mosaic chaplains. The Blessing of the Hands is a hospital tradition practiced around the world. It is unclear when this sacred tradition originated, but many believe it began at the time of Florence Nightingale – a 19th Century nurse who is considered the founder of modern nursing. Human touch is such an important component of health care, and the Blessing of Hands is especially meaningful to nurses. It is a symbolic representation of how the hands should be used to deliver care and compassion and be a blessing to those who nurses encounter. “The blessing ties to the original Nightingale Pledge to serve before God and others,” says Spiritual Health Manager Dan Mefford. “It provides a spiritual experience, symbolically linking the art and science of health care. The intent is to let nurses, and other caregivers, know their work is sacred and appreciated.” To all nurses, the Mosaic Chaplains offer the following Blessing of the Hands prayer for Nurses’ Week 2024. 🙏🏻 Bless the sacred work of these hands 🙏🏻 May these hands be caring in the presence of pain 🙏🏻 May these hands be steady in the face of pressure 🙏🏻 May these hands work with compassion in moments of a patient's fear 🙏🏻 The work of these hands embodies what it is to be a selfless giver of care 🙏🏻 Be with the one who gives these hands to the service of others

Most people think of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as the treatment for “diving accidents.” It is that and so much more. At Mosaic Life Care, there are outpatient and inpatient nurses who help with this treatment. In honor of Nurses’ Week, let’s learn a little bit more about the role of a hyperbaric nurse and the conditions they treat. Did you know that wound care certified nurses undergo specialized training and demonstrate a mastery of skin and wound care management knowledge and skills? “Our nurses who are certified for hyperbaric treatment complete a 40-hour, in-person, course just to operate the chambers,” says Mandy Burkeybile, practice manager at Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph – Wound Care. “Then they have added training with consultants and experienced nurses. Before they are even allowed to sit for the certification test, they must complete 400 hours of hands-on experience with the hyperbaric chambers.” Our hyperbaric nurses who are trained to operate our chambers in St. Joseph are: • Brenda Barton, RN, CHRN • Mandy Burkeybile, LPN • Andrea Ezzell, LPN • Rachel Kinney, RN, CHRN • Tonya Oliver, RN, CHRN • Dana Smith, RN Treatment can be carried out in either a mono- or multi-place chamber. The former accommodates one patient and is pressurized with near 100% oxygen. The patient breathes the ambient chamber oxygen directly. At Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph – Wound Care, there are two mono-chambers. There is science to prove that the 14 indications recommended by the UHMS are effective and can help heal patients including: ✅ Air or gas embolism ✅ Carbon monoxide poisoning ✅ Gas gangrene ✅ Crush injury ✅ Decompression sickness ✅ Arterial insufficiencies and problem wounds ✅ Severe anemia ✅ Intracranial abscess ✅ Necrotizing (or dying) soft tissue infections ✅ Refractory osteomyelitis ✅ Delayed radiation injury ✅ Compromised grafts and flaps ✅ Acute thermal burn injury, and ✅ Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss Hyperbaric is not a treatment that provides an immediate response. It takes time. Therapy usually starts with 30 treatments (one a day) Monday – Friday. “It’s really nice we get to see them every day and build strong relationships with them, says Andrea of patients receiving hyperbaric treatment. “They definitely know us by first name, and we get really close with them.” Thank you to Mosaic’s hyperbaric nurses for providing this specialized care in northwest Missouri.
